"My lord initiating be O so present among us. Thy feathered wings expanding tip to tip to cover the horizon. Sing forth O great hawk-headed lord for thy call brings terror to the hearts of those that hear your battle cry. And as your tail flicks and your shadow covers them in darkness, they will remember that your fury is not yet known but only hinted at, as the shroud of the night star light surrounds them.
Head my cry, and come forth O children of the stars and be one with my minions, for you art to prepare the way for this Aeon to take hold with a shudder that exalts itself before the many. Be it ever the wisest among us who can see the truth and who can behold the beauty that it sheds over you. These are the times that try the souls of men and that bring forth the future that surrounds us.
Be it the many or the little known, be it the great one or the smallest, be it the great throne before you that you see, and ascendeth you to the west. I am thy great father fire that feeds and obliterates, the voice that calls forth. Be that fire with the hopes and dreams and not the failure of the future, for it is in my eye, my divine nature, that I call you thus…"
On Thelema
Thelema is the name for a system of Magical Philosophy that was first divulged to the world in the Book "Liber AL vel Legis", commonly referred to as "The Book of the Law", in Cairo, Egypt, in 1904. On April 8th, 9th and 10th of that year, a communication was received by Rose Edith Kelley and written down by her husband Aleister Crowley. This communication consisted of three small chapters that were received at noon, one on each of the three days. Within this writing, with its strange phrases and multi-layered meanings, a new Law for a new Aeon was proclaimed.
"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law." Liber AL I:40
This Law proclaims that every woman and every man his a unique, individual and autonomous Will, and that she or he has an inalienable right and responsibility to find out that purpose, and to achieve it, no matter what it may be. Each person’s Will is unique, and can only be discovered by his or her self. No one else is at liberty to tell another what their Will is or how they should live their life according to their Will. This Will is Spiritual, and the reason why one has incarnated on this planet. But, how does one discover what their Will is?
"Love is the law, love under will." Liber AL I:57
In Thelema, Love means attraction and union. This Union can be union with others, union with ideas or union with experiences. One must discover and follow their path, by uniting with each and every experience that one needs in order to accomplish their Will, no matter what it may be. Since Thelema is a Magical Philosophy, and not just a mental or mystical exercise of the mind, there are Magical means of personally seeking out and discovering your Will. In the training of Templum Babalonis, these methods are often physical and experiential, and the Outer Temple degree structure is designed to help the student seek out and discover their Will through the magical training they receive.
There are seven main divine names associated with the Current of Thelema, all but one of which is expounded upon in The Book of the Law. These are Nuit, Hadit, Therion, Babalon, Hoor-Paar-Kraat, Heru-Ra-Ha, and Ra-Hoor-Khuit. We hesitate here to call these energies “Deities” or “Gods” or “Goddesses” in the classical way that people often refer to, say, Isis as a Goddess. Although their “energies” can and will appear god-like in aspect at certain times in magical work, they can also appear to be energies that are manifestations of an initiatory process, or energies that are represented by various paths, magical processes and formulas, or they can become avatars embodied in human flesh much like the Hindu Deities.
It is best to simply study these ideas as much as possible as they appear in The Book of the Law. This most important book must be studied by each person independently, in light of their own path, and that ultimately they alone must decide on any “meaning” therein as it applies to their own lives and Will.
